Bible Study Week 10 - Growing In The Holy Spirit
Purpose of This Bible StudyLesson
Today we will study why it is important for Christians to grow in Spirit so as to accomplish God’s purpose here on earth and to live victoriously as Christians.
Lesson Objective
This lesson will guide the participants to:
- Discover the works of the flesh that hinder the growth in the Spirit
- Discover the fruit of the Holy Spirit
- Discover the secret of spiritual growth
Introduction
Last week’s lesson focused on the importance of being led by the Holy Spirit in our Christian walk. We saw that unless the Spirit of God leads us, it is impossible to reach our full potential as Christians because we would not be in tune with God’s will for us. It is God’s will that all Christians may grow and experience a deeper relationship with Him through the Holy Spirit so that they may accomplish His purposes here on earth.
Jesus teaching his disciples about the need to accomplish this purpose said “My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work” (John 4:34John 4:34
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to accomplish his work.
KJV). Later when he had finished this task, he spoke to God and said, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do” (John 17:4John 17:4
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
4 I glorified thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which thou hast given me to do.
KJV). We need to have a complete paradigm shift in our spirits and forsake the works of the flesh, so that we can echo the words of Paul ” I have finished the work able to accomplish our purposes and finish the task that God has given us.
Today’s Lesson:
Begin today’s lesson by reading Matt 16: 24-27Matt 16: 24-27
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whosoever would save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it.
26 For what shall a man be profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and forfeit his life? or what shall a man give in exchange for his life?
27 For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.
, John 15:1-8John 15:1-8
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he taketh it away: and every [branch] that beareth fruit, he cleanseth it, that it may bear more fruit.
3 Already ye are clean because of the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; so neither can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same beareth much fruit: for apart from me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; and [so] shall ye be my disciples.
and Galatians 5:16-26Galatians 5:16-26
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are contrary the one to the other; that ye may not do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye are led by the Spirit, ye are not under the law.
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties,
21 envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 meekness, self-control; against such there is no law.
24 And they that are of Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with the passions and the lusts thereof.
25 If we live by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk.
26 Let us not become vainglorious, provoking one another, envying one another.
The Paradox of Growing in The Spirit
It is such a great mystery and irony that the Christian who wants to grow in the spirit must continually die to the self. Jesus said “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it dies, it bringeth forth much fruit. (John 12:24John 12:24
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a grain of wheat fall into the earth and die, it abideth by itself alone; but if it die, it beareth much fruit.
). In saying this, Jesus meant that spiritual growth and multiplication comes from death. In showing us this example, God himself sent His son to die so that many could become His sons in the spirit. Growing in the spirit therefore means submission to the Holy Spirit by dying to self and carrying our crosses daily. (Matt 16: 24Matt 16: 24
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
).
There are three types of people in the world: a) the natural man/woman who has not had an encounter with Jesus Christ; b) the self-centered or carnal Christian and c) the Christ- centered or Spirit-filled Christian. The natural man cannot perceive the things of God at all because he is dead spiritually, and the carnal Christian lives to gratify the desire of his flesh only. However, the Christ-centered Christian is distinguished by his zeal for the things of God because he has “circumcised his heart by the Spirit” (Rom 2: 29Rom 2: 29
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
) and Christ now sits on the throne of his heart. As he submits daily to the leading of the Holy Spirit, this Christian continues to yield more fruit and to accomplish greater things as Christ said “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these because I am going to be with the Father”(John 14:12John 14:12
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater [works] than these shall he do; because I go unto the Father.
). Notice that it was after Jesus had gone to be with the Father and the Holy Spirit had come upon the disciples that this promise was fulfilled, because they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and were able to accomplish great things.
It is only the Holy Spirit who can sustain our spiritual growth, as we drink of the living waters everyday because, as we all know water is life. Jesus talking about the Holy Spirit to the Samaritan woman said “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14John 4:14
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV
14 but whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up unto eternal life.
). Lets us therefore tap into this well of water and bear much fruit for our master as He sustains and nourishes us.

Izbrano poglavje ne obstaja! - The Grace to Race
“I have done my best in the race, I have run the full distance, and I have kept the faith”.
Dr. Myles Munroe a leading pastor and author, says that the graveyard is a place of great treasure because many people who are buried, died without ever knowing God’s purpose for them and so they never ran their race.
Saul of Tarsus who later became Paul could have died a persecutor of the brethren and a murderer, but after his conversion he chose to die to self and was mightily led by the Holy Spirit and he died a saint.
Many times he referred to himself as “a prisoner of Christ “and as a result of this denial, the Holy Spirit changed him and used him for great eternal works.
May God also give us the grace to run the race that is set before us and to accomplish our eternal purpose as we crucify ourselves everyday.
Amen.
