Bible Study Week 16: Spiritual Warfare - The Breastplate of Righteousness

Published by Rose under Weekly Reflections

Purpose of This Lesson

Last week we began examining the SIX types of armor that a Christian is supposed to wear and fight with in . We examined the role that the Belt of Truth plays in ensuring that the does not fall prey to the deceptions of the enemy. We saw that the Belt holds everything together and it was mostly used to hold the soldier’s sword safely in place; every Christian must therefore have the Truth.

Lesson Objective:

This lesson will guide the participants to:

Introduction

Paul lived at a time when the Roman soldiers were seen everywhere and he therefore uses the breastplate to illustrate to his audience in Ephesians 6:14Ephesians 6:14

for them to grasp this truth easily. He seems to be saying to them “can you imagine a soldier going to war without a breastplate?” It would be very easy for an enemy to attack and kill him because the enemy could easily thrust a spear straight to his heart! And it is the same with Christians today, because without the , we are “dead meat”! The breastplate of righteousness is the only armor that can protect our hearts.

Today’s Lesson

11 1 And it came to pass, at the return of the year, at the time when kings go out [to battle], that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried at Jerusalem. 2 And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king's house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. 3 And David send and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? 4 And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her ; and she returned unto her house. 5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, and said, I am with child. 6 And David sent to Joab, [saying], Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7 And when Uriah was come unto him, David asked of him how Joab did, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered. 8 And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house, and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king's house, and there followed him a mess [of food] from the king. 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and went not down to his house. 10 And when they had told David, saying, Uriah went not down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Art thou not come from a journey? wherefore didst thou not go down unto thy house? 11 And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in booths; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open field; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing. 12 And David said to Uriah, Tarry here to-day also, and to-morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the morrow. 13 And when David had called him, he did eat and drink before him; and he made him drunk: and at even he went out to lie on his bed with the servants of his lord, but went not down to his house. 14 And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. 16 And it came to pass, when Joab kept watch upon the city, that he assigned Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men were. 17 And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people, even of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war; 19 and he charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast made an end of telling all the things concerning the war unto the king, 20 it shall be that, if the king's wrath arise, and he say unto thee, Wherefore went ye so nigh unto the city to fight? knew ye not that they would shoot from the wall? 21 who smote Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? why went ye so nigh the wall? then shalt thou say, Thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. 22 So the messenger went, and came and showed David all that Joab had sent him for. 23 And the messenger said unto David, The men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entrance of the gate. 24 And the shooters shot at thy servants from off the wall; and some of the king's servants are dead, and thy servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also. 25 Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another; make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and encourage thou him. 26 And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband. 27 And when the mourning was past, David sent and took her home to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased Jehovah.

10 And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: 11 Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man. 12 Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying? 13 But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up. 14 Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit. 15 And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable. 16 And he said, Are ye also even yet without understanding? 17 Perceive ye not, that whatsoever goeth into the mouth passeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? 18 But the things which proceed out of the mouth come forth out of the heart; and they defile the man. 19 For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings: 20 these are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not the man.

Guard Your Heart

A story is told of a drunken man who fell into the hands of robbers as he was going back home. They beat him and stole from him and left him for dead near a petrol (service) station. When the man woke up it was very dark and he could only read four letters of the blinking signboard of the petrol station because the first letter was missing. The words that he saw were written in red and read: HELL.

He immediately sobered up and started crying and repenting his sins and the kind of life he had led, because he thought he was dead and now in HELL! One of the guards at the petrol station ran to him and asked him” what is the problem sir?” and he replied “I am in hell! Are you an angel? Please ask God to give me a second chance” shocked and bewildered, the security guard quickly corrected him “no sir, you are not dead and I am not an angel, and you are not in hell, you are at a SHELL petrol station”. Just like this drunkard, many people wait until it is too late to start living a righteous life. The Bible says, “. . . the devil is like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5: 81 Peter 5: 8
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

8 Be sober, be watchful: your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour,

English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

In the Beatitudes, taught the multitudes saying: “Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God” (Matt 5:8Matt 5:8

Thank you Lord for showing me the truth about myself–that on my own I could never be good enough to live in your presence. Thank you for taking my sins to the cross and offering me your righteous life. Thank you for forgiving me and for filling me with your righteous life.

Bible Study Week 13 - Introduction to Spiritual Warfare in a Christian’s Life

Published by admin under Weekly Reflections

Purpose of This Lesson

This is a new series on to help us understand how to take our positions as soldiers enlisted in an army. Christ is our Captain and God is the Commander in Chief. Satan and his host of fallen angels are our main enemies and in this regard, it is of utmost importance that we each understand that the is not eating and drinking (Rom 14: 17Rom 14: 17
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

a), but we have been enrolled as soldiers in the army to win men and women from the Kingdom of Darkness into God’s Kingdom of Light.

Lesson Objective

This lesson will guide the participants to:

  1. Understand their role as soldiers of Jesus Christ
  2. Understand the extent and nature of the warfare
  3. Understand the origin of Satan and his agents

Introduction

The battle against spiritual forces is quite old. It started with Satan’s rebellion against God. Isaiah 14:12-15Isaiah 14:12-15
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations! 13 And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit.

WP-Bible plugin
KJV. After God created mankind, Satan decided to deceive mankind. He succeeded in the Garden of Eden when he seduced Eve and made her to sin against God through disobedience. Mankind was chased from the Garden of Eden (the place where they fellowshipped with God). Many people deny the existence of Satan and his influence in our lives, yet Christ used very plain words to describe him in John 8:44John 8:44
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father it is your will to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and standeth not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father thereof.
when He spoke to the Pharisees saying “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in truth, because there is no truth in him”. In 1 John 2:16-171 John 2:16-17
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vain glory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
we are told that the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the vain glory (pride) of life are not from God but of this world which shall pass away with its lusts but the person who does God’s will shall abide for ever.

The Devil even tempted (the Son of God) by offering Him the kingdoms of this world and their glory if He worshiped the Devil. Matt 4:8-9Matt 4:8-9
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

8 Again, the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 and he said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

WP-Bible plugin
. The Devil’s aim is to ensure that mankind is condemned by God forever and that no one is saved. He therefore uses his tactics to this end. The battle is primarily in the mind and the heart. The Bible tells us that we do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Eph 6:12Eph 6:12
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual [hosts] of wickedness in the heavenly [places].
. We are also instructed to put on the full armor of God to defend ourselves against the wiles (evil schemes) of the evil one. Eph 6:11Eph 6:11
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
. These are spiritual weapons to guard our salvation, our righteousness, our faith, God’s truth in us, our readiness to spread God’s word, and to use God’s word as an offensive weapon (the Sword of the Spirit) to attack. We are also to prayer continuously for other believers. We are further told in 2 Cor 10:4-52 Cor 10:4-5
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

4 , 5 casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;
that our (spiritual) weapons are to cast imaginations, pull down strongholds and everything that exalts itself against the knowledge of God and bring every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Today’s Lesson

Begin today’s lesson by reading Job 1:6-12Job 1:6-12
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them. 7 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. 8 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil. 9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? 10 Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11 But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will renounce thee to thy face. 12 And Jehovah said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.

, Isaiah 14:12-15Isaiah 14:12-15
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, that didst lay low the nations! 13 And thou saidst in thy heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit upon the mount of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to Sheol, to the uttermost parts of the pit.
and Eph 6:12Eph 6:12
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual [hosts] of wickedness in the heavenly [places].

Invisible But Not Invincible

Many myths have gathered around the person of the Devil throughout the ages. Much poetry, tradition, and even our fears have caricatured his person, exaggerated his character, and colored him black and ugly. Although he is invisible, there is truth in regard to him and his work, which is to destroy the human race by misleading them. The does not tell us how many angels fell with the Devil, we have no record regarding this information, but the fact is that these unseen forces are spoken of as “spiritual hosts of wickedness” (Eph 6:12Eph 6:12
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual [hosts] of wickedness in the heavenly [places].

WP-Bible plugin
ASV ), an unspecified number. How innumerable they are, we cannot tell. The demoniac of Gadara was named “Legion”: “because many demons were entered into him” (Luke 8:30Luke 8:30
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

30 And Jesus asked him, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; for many demons were entered into him.
ASV
); and also we read that seven controlled one woman, as was the case with Mary Magdalene (Luke 8:2Luke 8:2
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

2 and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary that was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
).

We therefore have a real enemy and although he is invisible, he is not invincible i.e. he has already been defeated as Romans 8:37Romans 8:37
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

say; “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us”. Remember that Christ’s great promise in Revelation 3:5Revelation 3:5
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

5 He that overcometh shall thus be arrayed in white garments; and I will in no wise blot his name out of the book of life, and I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels.
, “He that overcometh, the same shall be clothed in white raiment; and I will not blot out his name out of the book of life, but I will confess his name before my Father, and before his angels”. In Rev 12:11Rev 12:11
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

11 And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony; and they loved not their life even unto death.
we are told of the saints who overcome the Devil by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Jesus conquered the death and the power of the devil on the cross and in His name (Jesus) Christians have been given power over evil.

In conclusion therefore, the Devil’s agenda is to gain control of this world by working through people. Sometimes he succeeds in recruiting national leaders like Adolf Hitler and Mussolini and others in his schemes, but God’s agenda is to use godly men and women to do battle with the forces of darkness, to bring about God’s kingdom of Light upon the earth by the Holy Spirit. Demons have no bodily form, so to accomplish their missions they need humans whom they control to do evil and work against God, as was the case of Judas Iscariot. Sometimes the demons are able to actually possess the individual so that the person can no longer exercise his or her own will.
