Bible Study Week 24 - Developing a Christ-Like Mind

Published by Rose under Weekly Reflections

Purpose of This Lesson

This lesson will guide the participants to understand that developing the is a process which involves the and us. The tells us that ‘Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man” (Luke 2:52Luke 2:52
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

52 And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

). If you are to have the you must expect newness, because the mind of is not a stagnant mind.

Learning Goals

This lesson will guide the participants to:-

  1. Learn how to set their minds on things above
  2. Learn how to allow God to renew and reignite their minds
  3. Learn how to gird up their minds for action.

Introduction

There are basically three stages in the process of developing a Christ-like mind and these are:

  1. The Beginning stage which is characterized by the Will Principle
  2. The Growing stage which is characterized by the River Principle
  3. The Qualified stage which is characterized by the Readiness Principle

Today we will study the first stage which is the Beginning stage which involves learning the Will Principle. As a today we must decide, choose or determine the focus of our minds because that is the starting point of developing a . Often you cannot control our emotions but you always have control of your will. For example, if someone insulted you, your feelings would be hurt but you have a choice to either insult them back (revenge) or ignore. When we study the life of Jesus Christ, we see that on many occasions. He chose not to revenge, even when He hang on the cross, he said “Father, forgive them. . . “(Luke 23:34Luke 23:34
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

34 And Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And parting his garments among them, they cast lots.

). Again when Jesus taught his disciples, he said “do not take revenge on someone who wrongs you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let him slap your left cheek too” (Matt 5:39Matt 5:39
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

39 but I say unto you, resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
).

The Will Principle is one of the most difficult and crucial stage for us as to learn, because we as human beings have been created with our own will, but if we are to develop the mind of Christ, then we need to allow God to have total control of our will. We should learn to exchange our will for God’s will, and that is why last week we saw the WWJD slogan (What Would Jesus Do?). We have to begin thinking the thoughts of Christ!

Begin Today’s Lesson by reading: Acts 9:1-16Acts 9:1-16
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

9 1 But Saul, yet breathing threatening and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2 and asked of him letters to Damascus unto the synagogues, that if he found any that were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3 And as he journeyed, it came to pass that he drew nigh unto Damascus: and suddenly there shone round about him a light out of heaven: 4 and he fell upon the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5 And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he [said], I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: 6 but rise, and enter into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. 7 And the men that journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing the voice, but beholding no man. 8 And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw nothing; and they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. 9 And he was three days without sight, and did neither eat nor drink. 10 Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and the Lord said unto him in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I [am here], Lord. 11 And the Lord [said] unto him, Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus: for behold, he prayeth; 12 and he hath seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight. 13 But Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard from many of this man, how much evil he did to thy saints at Jerusalem: 14 and here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call upon thy name. 15 But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings, and the children of Israel: 16 for I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name's sake.

2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.

Name of for today: The Lord our Righteousness ( Tzidkanyu: Jer. 23:6).

to Begin the Lesson: Lord you are my Righteousness. My righteousness is as filthy rags to You. Please guide me through the process where Your life becomes my life and where Your righteousness becomes my righteousness. Help me to set my mind and heart to You. Amen.

The Will Principle

The first principle of developing a is the “Will Principle“. In the Will Principle, we begin a process whereby one has to decide by themselves to develop a . God created us with a free will and so it is important for us to know that in this process, the Holy Spirit will only guide us in it as far as we allow Him, because we have a free will. The Bible says “Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth” (Col 3:2Col 3:2
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

2 Set your mind on the things that are above, not on the things that are upon the earth.

). A similar idea occurs in Phil 4:8Phil 4:8
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honorable, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
“Finally brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worth of praise, let your mind dwell on these things”.

Decision making is not a problem with animals; but with human beings, the will is that part of the mind over which you have control. Animals act on instinct which is the opposite of a will.

Questions For Discussion - Week 24

  1. What is the safest way to maintain purity in the face of temptation? Please use Psalms 101:3Psalms 101:3
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

    ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
  4. Name two things that can show that Christians are responsive to God. Please explain

    a)……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Bible Study Week 22 - Becoming Like Christ

Published by Rose under Weekly Reflections

Purpose of This Lesson

This lesson will guide the participants to understand that the goal of every is to become like .

Learning Goals

This lesson will guide the participants to:-

  1. Learn to think the thoughts of
  2. Challenge the learners to become Christ-like in thinking

The overall goal will be to guide the participants to develop and cultivate a deeper intimacy with God in prayer and in His Word.

Introduction

The lessons on this topic are based on a study guide book entitled The Mind of by T.W. Hunt and Claude V. King (2001). The authors say that it is the Holy Spirit who will enable the participants to grasp the significance of becoming like as a , because that is why God created us. “For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren” (Rom 8:29Rom 8:29
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

29 For whom he foreknew, he also foreordained [to be] conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren:

). So even as you begin this series, pray and ask God to reveal the truths about this subject to you, because God’s desire is that you be like .

The authors also encourage the participants to approach this course practically as it is intended to be more practical than theoretical; it should be studied with a view to immediate application i.e. applying the word in our lives as James 1:22James 1:22
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.

WP-Bible plugin
exhorts us saying “Keep on being doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves”. Another aspect of this series is that there are more activities included to make it practical. For example, you will discover the Name of and make a prayer before starting the lesson in order to reinforce your Bible study.

Begin Today’s Lesson by reading: Romans 12:2Romans 12:2
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

2 And be not fashioned according to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, and ye may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

5 Have this mind in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6 who, existing in the form of God, counted not the being on an equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men; 8 and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, becoming obedient [even] unto death, yea, the death of the cross.

Name of for Today: The Bread of Life

to Begin the Lesson: , I am hungry and thirsty after your righteousness. I do want to be like you. You are the itself. Fill me with yourself so that I may experience the abundant life you came to give. Amen.

The Personality Test

One of the aspects of your personality that God will measure constantly for Christlikeness is your mind. Becoming like Christ is a lifelong process and it will not be finished this side of heaven, because God is continually molding and shaping your life into the image of . We need to allow God to work with us day by day, and the only way we will do this effectively is by spending time with God in and in His Word daily.
Six times the New Testament describes or implies what the Christian’s mind is be like. In each case, the word mind is mentioned. From these we can derive six adjectives that describe God’s ideal for your mind. These characteristics are as follows:

  1. Alive-”the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Rom 8:6Rom 8:6
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace:
    )
  2. Single-minded- “I am afraid, lest . . . your minds should be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ” (2 Cor 11:32 Cor 11:3
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ.
    ).
  3. Lowly-”in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves (Phil 2:3Phil 2:3
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

    3 [doing] nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself;
    )
  4. Pure- “Unto the pure all things are pure; but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled” (Tit 1:15Tit 1:15
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

15 To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
    ).
  5. Responsive- “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures” (Lk 24:45Lk 24:45
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

    45 Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;
    ).
  6. Peaceful-”The mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Rom 8:6Rom 8:6
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 For the mind of the flesh is death; but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace:
    ).

Questions For Discussion - Week 22

Let us begin our lesson by looking at the first and last characteristic “alive” and “peaceful”. Paul tells us, “the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace” (Rom. 8:6). Without Christ we are dead (Eph 2:1Eph 2:1
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

2 1 And you [did he make alive,] when ye were dead through your trepasses and sins,

WP-Bible plugin
). In Christ we have everlasting life (John 3:36John 3:36
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
). Jesus went further than saying we live. Jesus said that He came in order that we might have abundant life (John 10:10John 10:10
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

10 The thief cometh not, but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I came that they may have life, and may have [it] abundantly.
). You demonstrate this life (or death) constantly by the choices you make. When you set your mind on the Spirit, you experience life.

Name of Christ for Today’s Lesson: The

“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit”. (Zech 4:6Zech 4:6
English: American Standard Version (1901) - ASV

6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of Jehovah unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith Jehovah of hosts.

)

When we feast on the word of God during our fasts,
We are able to accomplish great Spiritual feats.

Amen.
